What is Albany WAVES

What is Albany WAVES?

The City of Albany is embarking on a comprehensive project to reimagine its approximately 4.6 miles of waterfront along the Hudson River with funding from the New York State Department of State. The project builds on the Albany 2030 Comprehensive Plan which aims to leverage Albany’s history and diverse natural, cultural, institutional, and human resources to become a global model for sustainable revitalization and urban livability. The Albany WAVES project has three components:

  1. Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) update – The City will update its 1991 LWRP to reflect current needs, interests, and regulations, incorporating new projects that will contribute to a vibrant, resilient waterfront while promoting local investment.

  2.  North Warehouse District Brownfield Opportunity Area program Nomination Study (N-BOA) – The City will complete an in-depth analysis of existing conditions and potential redevelopment scenarios for an approximately 102-acre area of the North Warehouse District adjacent to the Hudson River.

  3. South Waterfront District Brownfield Opportunity Area program Nomination Study (S-BOA) – The City will complete an in-depth analysis of existing conditions and potential redevelopment scenarios for an approximately 23-acre area of the South Waterfront District on the Hudson River.

A Steering Committee comprised of local stakeholders and government officials will oversee all aspects of the Albany WAVES project. The committee will be supported by project partners from the City of Albany Planning & Development office, a consultant team, and New York State Department of State. The project includes a Community Participation Plan to keep stakeholders and the general public informed and engaged throughout the process. The project was launched in fall 2020 and will run through 2021. See the project schedule for key milestones.
